The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to present a “comprehensive report” on the probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases within a month.
A PIl filed by a member of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, S Gurlad Singh Kahlon, demanding for a Court-supervised probe informed the Court that a special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Centre was supposed to finish its term by February 17 this year. However, no chargesheets had been filed based on the probe conducted by the SIT, the petition alleged.
Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinky Anand told the Court that the SIT had made considerable progress in its investigation of 218 cases. The probe team had even taken decision to re-investigate 22 cases. However, the petitioner alleged that though the SIT had been given extensions in the past it failed to complete the probe.
The bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R Banumathi directed ASG Anand to submit a comprehensive report on the progress made by SIT by February 20, the next date of hearing.
