Ahead of the General Elections, problems have begun to emerge for BSP chief Mayawati after the Supreme Court on Friday sought her response to a PIl challenging the CBI’s decision to close the disproportionate assets case against her.
Eighteen months after the Supreme Court ruled that FIR against her in DA case was not maintainable; a PIl filed by social activist Kamlesh Verma brought focus back on the case with his demand to pursue the investigation already carried out by CBI.
Issuing notice to CBI and Mayawati, the bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justices Ranjan Gogoi and MY Eqbal said, “We are issuing notice on the petition. But, the CBI cannot always depend on the court’s advice.”
As the DA case FIR had emerged out of Taj Heritage Corridor scam during Mayawati’s tenure as UP CM, the court had in July 2012 brought an abrupt end to the nine-year-old case as in its opinion, the court had directed CBI only to investigate against Mayawati in Taj Corridor scam.
Since the DA case was an offshoot of same investigation, CBI presumed it to enjoy same legal sanctity that was shared by main FIR in scam.
