The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the screening of the Rajinikanth-starrer Kaala that is to hit the theatres on Thursday. A Vacation Bench of the apex court refused to entertain a petition by KS Rajashekaran, a film producer, who claimed that the story of the film including songs and scenes of the movie were his copyrighted work that were stolen by the producers of the film after he had met them on an earlier occasion.
The movie Kaala is produced by Rajinikanth’s actor son-in-law Dhanush under the banner of Wonderbar Films Pvt ltd. Rajashekaran's counsel said that there was a clear breach of his creative work by the film producers who failed to take his prior permission before making the movie. The movie is directed by Rajnikanth's brother.
But the bench of Justices Adarsh K Goel and Ashok Bhushan was not impressed as the movie was scheduled for release on Thursday. Even the Madras High Court had refused to grant interim stay on the movie's release.
The bench told the petitioner's counsel, "let the movie be released. How can we stop its releaseIJ" The petitioner informed the Court that he always wanted to portray Rajinikanth as the lead character in his script and e got registered the movie title in 1994 by the name 'Karikalan', who was a Chola king.
