SC pulls up K'taka Govt over prosecutor in Jayalalithaa case

Published on:

The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the silence of the Karnataka Government to not oppose the public prosecutor changing sides in the disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

After a special court in Bangalore which tried the case against Jayalalithaa and three others pronounced all persons guilty of accumulating disproportionate wealth to the tune of Rs66 crore and sentenced them to five years in prison, the special public prosecutor G Bhavani Singh who was appointed by the Karnataka Government continued as public prosecutor in the Karntaka High Court as well.

Objecting to this, DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan in his petition challenging Singh's continuation alleged that this was a “travesty of justice” and a “bizarre” situation where the SPP had become the pleader for Tamil Nadu Government.
