SC permits Centre to withdraw its notification allowing Jallikattu

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Centre to withdraw its notification allowing Jallikattu but entertained applications from animal rights NGOs and Animal Welfare Board questioning the validity of the Tamil Nadu law keeping Jallikattu out of the ambit of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. lawyers who came to bat in favour of TN Government’s law allowing Jallikattu on Tuesday faced the ire of the Supreme Court over the massive protests organised in the State to oppose the apex court’s stay on Jallikattu and the demand for a new law to overturn the judgment. The Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Rohington F Nariman said, “To say we want a change of law peacefully is one thing but to come on streets to openly defy the Supreme Court judgment is a different thing. You convey to your State administration that law and order situation holds primacy in a civilized society. When the final arbiter in the Constitution has reserved orders in a matter, we expect silence and obedience.” Senior advocate K Parasaran for TN said that the court order was not defied and law and order was under control. But BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that the situation turned violent towards the end of protest and two persons got killed. The Court asked the state and Centre to respond on whether the new law violated its May 2014 judgment while posting the case for hearing after six weeks.
