SC issues notices to MCI, Health Ministry

The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Union Health Ministry on a PIl that showcased a classic case of corruption where grant of approval to a medical college in Pathankot was revived within 24 hours after it was rejected.

Alleging foul play, the PIl filed by lawyer Ml Sharma sought an independent probe into the matter. Taking note of the peculiar facts of the case, a bench headed by Justice KS Radhakrishnan issued notice to the Centre and MCI and stayed the approval granted to the Chintpurni Medical College, providing 150 seats for MBBS course.

The petition filed by advocate K Sarda Devi stated that the Board of Governors of MCI which met on July 14 this year ruled out approval for the third batch of students for academic year 2013-14 citing several deficiencies pointed out by the team of Assessors who conducted an inspection.
