The Supreme Court on Monday asked lawyer bodies to reach at a consensus on bringing changes in the procedure to designate senior advocates in apex court and High Courts after a petition by senior advocate Indira Jaising raised concerns over some lawyers becoming seniors without having even a judgement or a case to their credit.
Jaising’s PIl supported by a host of senior lawyers comprising Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Rajiv Dhavan, Shekhar Naphade, and Vivek Tankha attacked the secret ballot system prevalent in the apex court that encouraged hectic lobbying by prospective candidates.
The Bench of Justices TS Thakur and V Gopala Gowda asked Attorney General to receive suggestions from Bar Council of India, Supreme Court Bar Association, and Bar Association of India and present those which are acceptable to all within four weeks.
