SC appoints new CBI chief as in-charge of 2G scam

The Supreme Court on Monday lifted the embargo placed by its earlier order restraining the CBI Director from interfering in the 2G case probe and prosecution.

With the retirement of then Director Ranjit Kumar Sinha against whom the order was passed and a new Director Anil K Sinha taking his place, CBI through senior advocate KK Venugopal sought a clarification from Court as the present Director was unable to take decisions in the 2G case due to the Court order.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Hl Dattu said, “We are informed that Anil Kumar Sinha has been appointed as the CBI Director. In view of the subsequent development, we permit him to take over the investigation in the case.”

Former CBI Director Ranjit Sinha had faced the embarrassing order removing him from 2G investigation after the Court found allegations of his interference to be “prima facie credible”.
