Ahead of the expiry of his extended month-long parole period, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has sought another 30-day extension of his parole, on the ground that he wants to take care of his “recuperating” wife Manyata, who underwent a surgery recently.
Fifty-four-year-old Sanjay, who had been released on a 30-day parole from the Yerwada prision on December 20, had got first extension of parole on January 20, 2014. In the normal course, Sanjay was to return to the Yerwada prison on or before February 21.
However, informed police sources said that the actor had applied for a second 30-day extension of his parole, saying that he wanted “to take care of his wife” who underwent a surgery recently.
Sources said the actor has written to Pune Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh seeking an extension of his parole till March 20.When contacted, Deshmukh told The Pioneer: “I am not aware if my office has received any such request…. Since I am now heading to New Delhi for a programme I cannot say anything about the status of any application, if it has been received by my office”.
Manyata, who was diagnosed with tumor in liver, had been admitted to a private hospital in the city suburbs early last month.
Sanjay is currently serving the remainder of 42 months’ jail term (in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts) in the Yerwada prison. His release from the prison on December 20, had come seven weeks after he had returned to the Pune-based jail, on after availing 28-day-long furlough.
Sanjay, who had initially been released on a 14-day- furlough on October 1, had succeeded in getting an extension of leave for another 14 days, a grace period that had come in handy for him to spend more time with his family and also to undergo treatment of blood clots formed in his legs. He had returned to the Yerwada prison on October 30.
After Sanjay’s parole was extended on January 20, the Pune divisional revenue administration granted parole to two more convicts in the 1993 serial case. They included: 71-year-old Zaibunissa Qazi. Zaibunissa, who was awarded five-year jail term for storing weapons, was released on parole February 6, after she spent eight months in Pune’s Yerawada jail.
