Sabarmati Ashram attack not pre-planned: Patkar

Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar had to admit before the court during cross-examination that she didn’t make any allegation that the assault on her at Sabarmati Ashram was a well planned conspiracy. On April 7, 2002, a mob of the BJP and Congress workers had protested Patkar’s presence at the peace meeting. They allegedly attacked Patkar and in the commotion, many others including mediapersons sustained injuries.

Subsequently, she filed an FIR against VK Saxena, president of National Council for Civil liberties (NCCl), Amit Shah, former Ahmedabad Mayor, Amit Thaker, BJP Yuva Morcha president and Rohil Patel, a Congress leader for allegedly planning a conspiracy against her.

Contradictory to her earlier stand, Patkar, during cross-examination before metropolitan magistrate AS Desai admitted that the FIR she lodged through fax didn’t contain the accusation that the attack on her was pre-planned. Medha also admitted that she sustained no injuries and neither medical examination was done on her by the police after the alleged attack nor she was examined by her private doctor. The NBA leader also admitted that she didn't take any medical treatment.
