The Government on Thursday claimed to have succeeded in computerising the entire workflow of almost all regional transport offices in the country. The digital project runs on the standard software applications Vahan and Sarathi.
“The Project now covers 99 per cent of RTOs in India. Their entire workflow has been computerized,” said Minister of Roads, Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes. He also launched the ‘Parivahan NextMile’ and its website nextmile.gov.in on Thursday for the Mission-Mode Project on National Transport Computerisation. The ministry is hoping that it will gradually revolutionise the working in the transport sector as it will bring in the much needed transparency.
“The project weaves all the RTOs into one single electronic entity. This, in turn, has made it possible to create the national and State data repositories — the National Register (NR) and the State Registers (SRs), respectively,” said Fernandes.
“The free flow and exchange of data across the nation makes it possible for any RTO to check the antecedents of a vehicle registration or a driving licence issued in another part of the country,” he said.
Digitization of records has also made it easy for the RTOs to track tax defaulters and for the enforcement and security agencies to track and identify offenders at the click of a button.
