In a significant development that has pressed into motion the process of unearthing alleged corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra’s lokayukta (retired) Justice Ml Tahaliyani has directed Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to submit a report to him within two weeks on the alleged irregularities in the awarding of road construction contracts in the civic body.
Taking serious cognizance of a letter written by Congress’ former MP Gurudas Kamat and a report published in a city newspaper, Justice Tahaliyani on Tuesday asked his office to register a complaint on the basis of Kamat’s complaint — which among other things stated that there was a cartel of contractor working for the BMC that corners the contracts floated by the civic body.
Alluding to the presence of cartel of contractors working for the BMC, Justice Tahaliyani said: “It is shocking to note that contractors M/s RK Madani who was found ineligible for the contract, has bagged the contract worth `100 crore”.
