Rly stations to get green building certifications

Published on:

Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has decided to work on star-rating system for 400 railway stations that have been identified by Government of India for redevelopment as part of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

IGBC would give these stations certifications in various categories to encourage green initiatives in public places, said Dr PC Jain, Chairman of IGBC, adding that the rating system would be introduced in next six months.

The idea is to turn railway stations into an experience for the travellers, says Jain, adding, “IGBC would like railway stations to adopt energy saving methods and go for renewable energy to go green. Solar panel can be fixed on the roof of railway stations for captive generation of power, installation of lED lights, changes for proper ventilation, cleaner toilets and rain water harvesting.”

Jain said some of metro stations in Delhi have already going green. IGBC was working with DMRC and already identified 102 stations in the national Capital which are all going green, he added. Sameer Sinha, Chairman of IGBC Ahmedabad Chapter said IGBC was mulling to select a railway station from Gujarat for pilot project.
