Rail passengers across the country got a “temporary” reprieve as the All India Railwaymen’s Federation decided  on Wednesday to postpone the indefinite strike by the employees of the Indian Railways and other Central Government establishments scheduled from April 11 on account of the Assembly elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puduchery, Assam and West Bengal.

The AIRF working president N Kannaiah, who is the most feared and dreaded railway union leader in south India had declared that the all trains in the country would come to a halt from 6 am on April 11. The strike was in protest against the “indifference” of the Union Government towards the charter of demands submitted by the AIRF and its demand not to go ahead with the move to privatise the railways.

The proposed indefinite strike by the railwaymen and employees of other Government establishments would begin on July 11, said a release issued by Kannaiah on Wednesday.
