Rising crime in Bihar taints Nitish Kumar's 100-day rule

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar completed 100 days in office on the last day of February and a day later he turned 65. In his third consecutive term as Chief Minister, Nitish has pledged to implement his seven resolves but the biggest problem his Government has been facing is law and order.

The seven resolves include: economic progress of youths and students, free power connection and tap water to each household, cemented lanes and drainage in each village, toilets in each home and women empowerment. The Bihar Budget presented on Friday has also greatly focused on these resolves and made more allocations for education, electricity and road construction in the Budget totalling Rs 1,44,696 crore.

The 65-year-old CM was well focusing on fulfilling his seven `Nishchay’ (resolves) which he had announced on the eve of Bihar Assembly polls in October 2015 until the sudden spurt in crime.

The Opposition on Wednesday created ruckus in both the Houses after rejection of their adjournment motions over special debate on rising crime graph. BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said the law and order problem could not be solved until the ruling party legislators are reined in. “The ruling alliance MlAs are on the rampage. They are involved in heinous crimes but going scot free. One of them is absconding for a month,” said Modi.

Nitish, who is in Kathmandu to attend the National Convention of Nepal Congress, had snubbed the Opposition charges on spiralling crime rate and had said that Bihar recorded less crime than other BJP-ruled States. “There seems to be a sinister design to defame Bihar and create a wrong perception about it,” he had said.

After the murder of two engineers in Darbhanga and one professional in Vaishali in December and January, there had been series of the killings of about half a dozen activists of BJP and lJP in February putting a question mark on the law and order situation. It had given enough ammo to the Opposition to train their guns on the Maha Gathbandhan Government. The lJP had even demanded imposition of President’s rule only two moths after Government formation.
