Inmates in the district jail at Kannaunj went on rampage after one of the inmates was found hanging with the ceiling of his barrack under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday night.
They attacked the jail staff and pelted stones on them alleging that the harassment and torture by jail superintendent and other staff had forced the inmate to commit suicide so a case should be registered against them in the matter.
The local district police chief and DM who reached the jail in the wee hours had summoned additional force from neighbouring district to defuse the situation. The matter could be only brought under control after senior officers assured of conducting a probe and taking action against the guilty.
