Reshuffle changes equations in Rajasthan

Published on:

Developments at the Centre, in the form of the recent reshuffle, have caused several temperature variations at the State level. In Rajasthan, there was jubilation in the Ashok Gehlot faction when CP Joshi was dropped from the Union Cabinet and given organisational responsibilities.

It was destined to be short-lived as on Monday, Girija Vyas and Sis Ram Ola were inducted.  The Congress high command has made it clear that it will introduce checks & balance in the State ahead of the November Assembly polls. The Chief Minister’s camp was not happy Mukul Wasnik — an old friend of Gehlot and in-charge for eight years — being divested of the State’s charge. However, the new man in, Gurudas Kamat, also new AICC general secretary, some was consolation. He is neither too close to Gehlot, nor an open adversary.

Joshi, once a protégé of Gehlot, has emerged as alternate to his mentor. Supporters feel he would be chief ministerial candidate if the party wins in November. Undercurrents between Joshi and Gehlot have been visible. By dropping Joshi from the Cabinet, the high command has sent the wrong signals on the factional fight in the State, which may cost it dear in the polls.Joshi backers feel working with Rahul will make him stronger. Both Vyas and Ola too are known for their anti-Gehlot feelings. Their elevation as Ministers at the Centre is clear indication that party would not give free hand to Gehlot.

Another trouble for Gehlot is the Jats, who feel he is behind arrest of Mahipal Maderna. Sources said veteran Jat Ola has been appointed to keep them happy. Vyas is also not too friendly with Gehlot and is unlikely to give him rein, though he may not be ambitious enough for the CM’s post, according to sources.

All in all, Gehlot has a rough road ahead of him.
