Tension gripped Janipur area of Jammu on Tuesday evening, following desecration of a famous religious place in the area.

Soon after the incident was reported by the management of the religious place, hundreds of youth and local residents assembled infront of the Janipur Police station and started peaceful demonstrations.

As number of protesters grew, traffic on the busy Janipur road was disrupted and tyres were burnt in the middle of the road. The protesters raised religious slogans demanding stern action against the culprits.

Angry residents outnumbered total number of police men present in the area. In the absence of any communication with the local district police/civil officials, the mob went unruly and torched several vehicles including two police vehicles to vent their ire.

According to eye witness reports on Tuesday evening two unidentified youth barged inside the sanctum sanctorum and allegedly desecrated the place in a bid to hurt the sentiments of the disciples.

Unconfirmed reports claimed some of the care takers present inside the religious place immediately raised an alarm to nab the culprits. They were reportedly detained by the police, but till late evening police had not issued any statement confirming the arrest of the youth responsible for the desecration. Till the time of filing the report protests were going on in the area and the district authorities were keeping a close watch on the volatile situation. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who was present in Jammu during the day, was also camping in Jammu and monitoring the situation.
