'Rejuvenated' Cong flexes muscles

Buoyed by the “success” of its farmers’ rally in the Capital on Sunday, a “rejuvenated” Congress is all set to attack the NDA Government in Parliament from Monday on issues including the controversial land Bill. The Parliament resumes after a month-long recess of the Budget Session.

More confrontations between the Treasury and Opposition Benches are expected in both Houses. But in Rajya Sabha, which would resume on Thursday, the Congress, with Janata Parivar outfits and other Opposition parties, will make all efforts to block the passage of the modified land Acquisition Bill of the NDA Government. The Opposition led by Congress is trying to project the Modi Government as “pro-corporate” and “anti-farmer” for pushing the Bill, an allegation dismissed by the BJP.

The Congress is also likely to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks in Canada about the “mess” left behind by others over last 50 years. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in his address in the Kisan-Khet rally on Sunday attacked Modi for his statement and said the PM has “lowered the dignity” of his office.

“There is not a single issue where the Government can count on their achievements of its 11-month rule. From anti-people land Ordinance to denial of compensation to the farmers in the aftermath of the unseasonal rains and hailstorms, from PM’s remark against India on a foreign soil to being soft on the separatists in Jammu & Kashmir.

All these will be raised in the remaining part of the Budget Session. We will also ask when will Modi credit the promised amount of Rs15 lakh to every Indian family after retrieving black money stashed abroad,” AICC spokesman Ajoy Kumar told The Pioneer.

And, as the Modi Government gets ready to celebrate one year in office, it is learnt, the Congress would bring out a comparison between the BJP’s poll promises and achievements. “It’s time that he gave an account of the lofty promises and dreams he sold to the people,” Deputy leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said.

Reeling under its worst-ever drubbing in the 2014 general elections, where it was reduced to 44 seats in the lok Sabha and lost several States thereafter, the party is sensing the controversy over the land Bill as an opportunity to revive its sagging fortunes and take on the NDA dispensation.
