Rebel Trinamool MP Somen Mitra quietly met Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday giving rise to speculation about his joining the Congress sooner than later.
While Mitra, a veteran leader and a former Pradesh Congress president — before he quit his parent party to join the Trinamool Congress — said the meeting was a “courtesy call”, sources close to him said the leader dwelt on two issues during his talks with the Finance Minister. According to sources, Mitra apart from discussing his “homecoming” spoke about the multi-thousand crore Saradha chit-fund scam in Bengal in which the names of a number of Trinamool MPs and Ministers had come up.
Currently the Enforcement Directorate and SFIO are handling the case. Mitra’s meeting with Chidambaram assumes importance because it comes close on the heels of former Railway Minister Mukul Roy’s meeting with him last month reportedly to speak on the same chit fund issue.
