Rape: Protest in Karbi Anglong

At least ten people were injured on Friday after police resorted to lathicharge to disperse a mob that was protesting against an alleged rape and police inaction to nab the culprits in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. The people were protesting in front of Dokmoka Army camp alleging eight jawans of rape and molesting other two, including a teenage girl, in the name of carrying out counter-insurgency operations on Monday last.

The villagers lodged a complaint against the eight jawans on Wednesday. However, the mob claimed that police’s inaction to nab the culprits forced them to come out to the streets. The protesters also pelted stones at the Army camp forcing the police to resort to lathi charge, injuring at least 10 of them. Police, however, said a few of the policemen were also injured during the mob attack.

Karbi Anglong, Superintendent of Police, Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta said the situation is under control now. “Some people received minor injuries. However, our police personnel had also been injured during the attack,” he added. On the allegation of rape, the SP said the police have medically examined the three victims and registered two cases regarding the incident. “We have also constituted a Special Investigation Team to look into the matter and we have also sent samples for forensic test. We are now waiting for the reports,” said Mahanta.

He said, “On Wednesday, a group of people came to the Dokmoka police station with three victims and said that one of them have been raped by the Army personnel while two others were molested. Mahanta said they have already informed this to the higher authority and assured all possible help.
