Rape, murder in Bengal again

Published on:

There is no let-up in violence against women in Bengal with yet another girl allegedly being raped, murdered and then thrown along the railway tracks at Dhupguri in North Bengal. Her fault was that she had protested against the humiliation of her father by a Trinamool Congress-sponsored kangaroo court.

The incident took place on Tuesday when a local Trinamool Congress leader called the girl’s father to settle a dispute over a power tiller. But he allegedly settled political scores as the girl’s father was reportedly from the Opposition CPI(M), sources said.Even as tension hightened in the kangaroo court locally called Salishi Sabha, the girl protested but she was immediately silenced by those around who beat her up and made her spit and lick.

Soon the girl went missing from the spot and later she was found besides the railway tracks in a semi-naked condition leading her father to complain that she was first raped and then murdered by her assailants. Two persons including a local ruling party leader was arrested. The girl’s father had named 13 people in the FIR. We are conducting an investigation but prima facie it seems to be a case of suicide, a police official said without willing to be named.

The Wednesday’s incident came barely a day after a girl student of the prestigious Jadavpur University complained of being molested by a group of boys who dragged her into a hostel room and then molested her and beat her up.

Curiously in this case also like the one at Biswa Bharati University the authorities preferred to look the other way when the victim’s father complained. “I complained to the Vice Chancellor and he asked me to come two days later,” the victim’s father said making students wonder as to why he did not take immediate action.

The VC, however, lodged a complaint and an inquiry was started on Wednesday.Incidentally, Bengal has in the past a few years topped the list of rape and violence against women though the State Government have always remained in denial mode.Meanwhile, the left parties on Wednesday launched a massive movement throughout the State demanding action against the culprits claiming the Dhupguri incident was an action replay of what they call political revenge taken by the ruling outfit.
