Ramadoss challenges Bhavani's appointment

The appointment of Bhavani Singh as public prosecutor by the Directorate of Vigilance and anti-Corruption (DVAC) in the disproportionate asset case against J Jayalalithaa, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has stirred a controversy in the State. S Ramadoss, founder of the Vanniyar-dominated PMK, has opposed the move by the DVAC to appoint Singh as public prosecutor to conduct the appeal to be filed by Jayalalithaa in the Karnataka High Court.

In a statement on Sunday, the PMK boss who is all set to cross over to the DMK camp for the 2016 Assembly election, asked the Karnataka Government to appoint a public prosecutor in consultation with the State HC. “The DVAC appointing Bhavani Singh as public prosecutor in the appeal to be filed by Jayalalithaa and others whpo are convicted and sentenced by the Special Court Judge in Bangalore is improper and illegal,” said Ramadoss.

He pointed out that Bhavani Singh was appointed as Public Prosecutor by the Karnataka High Court as per the orders issued by the Supreme Court.

“This was in continuation of the plea by Anbazhagan, the DMK general secretary, in 2003 that the trial of the disproportionate case should be shifted to a court outside Tamil Nadu  as most of the witnesses were turning hostile after Jayalalithaa returned to power in 2001,” said the Vanniyar leader.

He said it is time for Anbazhagan and DMK chief Karunanidhi to step in and make the Karnataka Government to appoint another Public Prosecutor. “I do not think Bhavani would present the case properly as he has been appointed by the AIADMK-led Government” said Ramadoss.
