Rajya sabha pays homage to rashtrapal, adjourns

Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday due to the demise of sitting Congress member Praveen Rashtrapal. The House will now have a sitting on Friday to complete its original schedule.

Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the House for the day as a mark of respect towards the member who passed away.

Rashtrapal died in New Delhi early on Thursday after suffering a massive heart attack. Ansari announced the news of Rashtrapal’s demise and the Upper House was adjourned after paying respects to the departed soul immediately after the House convened.

The lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday, a couple of days earlier than its original schedule of May 13. The session of the Rajya Sabha was curtailed by one day and it was to culminate on Thursday.

The Upper House will sit on Friday to witness customary farewell speeches the 58 Rajya Sabha MPs who have retired from the House, though a number of them have been renominated.

The session was curtailed in view of the last leg of campaigning for Assembly elections in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, besides the fact that the Government had already completed the important legislative business it planned to accomplish in this session.
