Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protest on Bihar Electoral Rolls

Published on:

The Rajya Sabha faced repeated disruptions and was ultimately adjourned for the day on Wednesday as Opposition MPs demanded urgent discussion on Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The House was first adjourned at 11 AM, then again at noon, with both sessions halted due to Opposition members raising slogans and demanding that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge be allowed to speak. The final adjournment came soon after the House reconvened at 2 PM.

Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025 during the post-lunch session, aiming to modernize the century-old law. However, AIADMK MP M Thambidurai’s remarks were interrupted by unrelenting protests.

Despite Chair Bhubaneswar Kalita's efforts to restore order, protests escalated with Opposition MPs entering the Well of the House and continuing slogans. Kalita ultimately adjourned proceedings for the day.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh earlier rejected 25 Rule 267 notices seeking discussion on SIR, slum demolitions in Delhi, discrimination against migrant workers, and air safety, triggering protests.

On Tuesday as well, similar protests over the SIR exercise had led to multiple adjournments without substantial business being conducted.
