Rain batters Chennai and north Tamil Nadu

Published on:

Heavy rain brought morning traffic in Chennai to a standstill on Monday as the Government declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the city and suburbs. Office goers had a tough time negotiating the flooded roads. Since the authorities are yet to start repairing the inundated roads, the flow of traffic continued to be slow. This has affected attendance in most of the offices and business establishments in Chennai.

Though the rainfall came to a stop by 10 am, the after effects continued throughout the day. The weather office has forecast more rains for the next three days in Chennai and other coastal districts in Tamil Nadu due to the low pressure area in south east Bay of Bengal. “Moderate to rather heavy rain would occur at many places over all the districts of coastal Tamil Nadu and P{uducherry,” said a release by the Regional Meteorological Department , Chennai.

Several low lying areas in the city were inundated even as the number of waterlogged areas were increasing. While many houses continue to remain submerged, the Government officials are faced with the serious issue of the number of days lost by educational institutions due to the heavy rains and floods.
