A five-hour rail blockade by Adivasi National Convention Committee (ANCC) on Monday affected the normal running of trains across the northeastern States even as the blockade forced the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authorities to control 16 trains in different stations.
The ANCC, a joint platform of different Adivasi organisations called a 11-hour rail blockade on Monday demanding the Government to fulfil their long standing demands including granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to them.
Hundreds of youth arrived at the Kokrajhar railway station around 6 am and blocked the railway tracks leading to complete halt in train movement. The organisation later decided to withdraw the blockade after blocking the tracks for five hours.
“We have submitted a memorandum to the Assam Government through the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner,” said Bishnu Orang, an ANCC leader while adding that they would resort to similar blockades in future if their demands are not met with.
