Rahul Gandhi addresses key meeting of MP Congress

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday addressed a key meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Congress’ political affairs committee, where he delivered a clear and firm message to party leaders: end factionalism and work together in unity. Sources present in the closed-door meeting said Gandhi stressed the importance of collective leadership and discouraged top-down decision-making.

“No decision will be imposed from above. You must take decisions together. If revisions are needed, we’ll make them,” he reportedly told the leaders.

Gandhi emphasised that future appointments — particularly those of district presidents — would come with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. The move is aimed at ensuring accountability and grassroots mobilisation as the Congress prepares to take on the BJP in a state where it has been out of power since 2020.

The Congress scion also participated in a meeting of the Congress legislature party and held strategy discussions focused on strengthening the organisation at all levels. Insiders say he urged MLAs and senior leaders to shed personal ambitions for the collective good of the party, indicating a no-tolerance approach to internal rifts.

Rahul Gandhi received a grand welcome upon his arrival at Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport, with hundreds of Congress workers and supporters lining up to greet him. However, his gesture of offering floral tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi without removing his shoes sparked a political row, drawing sharp criticism from Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who termed it ‘disrespectful’.

Gandhi took a strict stance regarding district Congress presidents, stating that they should not just hold the title but also deliver results.

He warned that if a district president is not performing, they will be immediately removed. It is not necessary that once appointed, they will remain in the position forever. In his address, Rahul Gandhi also took a dig at the Congress’s previous working style, saying that earlier the Congress used to send the wedding horse to the race and the racehorse to the wedding. Now, that will not happen.

The racehorse will run the race, the wedding horse will be part of the wedding, and the lame horse will be sent home.

He also said that the party’s goal is to prepare 55 future leaders in the state, and the role of district presidents will be crucial in this effort.

Rahul stated that from local body elections to the finalisation of assembly tickets, the report of the district president will be very important.

It will also be evaluated whether Congress votes have increased or decreased in their district. In a significant organisational move, the Congress has decided to deploy over 60 All India Congress Committee (AICC) observers across Madhya Pradesh for the next three months. These observers will oversee the restructuring process and ensure effective implementation of the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan at the grassroots level.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit signals the Congress party’s renewed focus on rebuilding its organisational strength in Madhya Pradesh — a key Hindi heartland state where political fortunes could be crucial for the party’s national resurgence.
