Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Gujarat High Court challenging the order of the Surat sessions court which declined to stay his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark that led to his disqualification as MP from Lok Sabha a month ago.

Congress member and an advocate, BM Mangukia, said Rahul Gandhi has filed an appeal in the HC against the  order of the sessions court.

“We have filed an application in the Gujarat High Court today challenging the Surat court’s recent verdict. I cannot share any more information in this matter for now,” said another lawyer for the matter Pankaj Champaneri who is appearing for Rahul Gandhi .

A metropolitan magistrate’s court in Surat on March 23 sentenced the former Congress president to two years in jail after convicting him under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500 (dealing with criminal defamation) in the 2019 case filed by Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

Following the verdict, Rahul Gandhi, elected to the Lok Sabha, was disqualified as a Member of Parliament.
