The Gulbarga police on Thursday said they would investigate the ragging of a Dalit  nursing student from Kerala  by her seniors at a nursing college in Gulbarga in Karnataka  and dubbed it to be a case of wrongful restraint, attempt to murder and atrocity.

The Gulbarga Superintendent of Police Shashi Kumar said that they have received an FIR from the Kerala Police against five individuals.

He said “We have received a copy of complaint and the FIR from Kerala Police and I have directed the officers to look into the case and we will look into the matter in a comprehensive manner.”

“As per the information I have got from the Kerala Police, FIR is registered against five individuals. It is a case of wrongful restraint, attempt to murder and atrocity. We haven’t arrested anybody, we have just taken the case for investigation and will do whatever is required,” he added.

The victim, a student of Al Qamar College of Nursing School in Gulbarga, is presently in a critical state in a Kerala hospital.

Since the unfortunate incident, the first year student from Kerala has been in hospital with several internal burns. She was shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College after having spent over a week in the ICU at a hospital in Karnataka.

The doctors have reportedly said that the toilet cleaning fluid has burnt the student’s internal organs.

However the principal of the nursing school, Esther, has said that there was no ragging, adding the girl drank the phenol because of some family problems. The victim’s mother, who is a daily wage labourer, took a loan of Rs3 lakh for her daughter’s education.
