Gurdaspur, Punjab: A soldier on leave in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district was allegedly beaten by his mother, brother and other relatives over a property dispute, his wife has claimed, in an incident that was recorded on video and is now circulating widely on social media.
The assault allegedly took place in Sainpur Abbal Khair village. According to the soldier’s wife, Simmi Saini, her husband, Wazir Singh, had built a shop and had it registered in his name. She alleged that some of his brothers had encroached on his agricultural land, and that relatives summoned him near the shop on the pretext of settling the matter.
Saini said the meeting turned violent the moment Singh got out of his vehicle. She alleged that she, too, was attacked when she rushed to the spot after being informed, and that she managed to film part of the confrontation on her mobile phone.
Singh was taken to the Government Hospital in Gurdaspur in an unconscious state and was reportedly admitted for about four days. Saini has accused the doctor on duty of failing to provide adequate treatment under pressure from the accused relatives, an allegation yet to be confirmed. The soldier is now recuperating at home.
The couple has further alleged that they continue to receive threats from the accused and are afraid to step out of their house. Saini also claimed that relatives have put their own locks on another property she had purchased.
Police have recorded Singh’s statement and obtained his medical report. Assistant Sub-Inspector Jai Singh, the investigating officer, said the probe is under way and that appropriate legal action will be taken against those found to be involved.
This is a developing story.
