KLike a husband who doubts the fidelity of his wife, the AIADMK came out on Friday accusing the BJP of having illegitimate relations with the DMK. Thambi Durai, the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker who is the AIADMK’s face in New Delhi, lambasted the Hindutva party of having secret understanding with the DMK.
Speaking to reporters at Karur, his home constituency, Durai questioned the propriety and timing of the CBI raids on the houses of the AIADMK Ministers and the State Police Chief in connection with the gutkha scam. “The date in which the CBI raids took place is noteworthy. People in Tamil Nadu knew that M K Alagiri, elder son of Karunanidhi was holding a rally in Chennai against his younger brother and DMK President M K Stalin. The CBI raids were held on that day itself only to divert the attention of the general public from the rally staged by Alagiri,” charged Durai.
He said the CBI could have conducted the raids on some other days. “There is every possibility of a secret deal between the BJP and the DMK. We have our own doubts about it. Why did the BJP sent a senior most Minister who happens to be a former president of the BJP for the memorial meeting held in honour of Karunanidhi? The AIADMK was not invited for the so called apolitical meeting,” charged Thampi Durai.
He said the BJP’s handling of the Karunanidhi death was clear proof of it’s new found love for the DMK. “Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned without conducting any business. The Centre declared a day of mourning and national flag flew half mast. This is unheard of in the past,” said Thampi Durai.
The Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker hinted that it was not proper on the part of BJP to depute its national leader to Tamil Nadu for a meeting held by the DMK which has not bothered to invite the AIADMK. “We expect some kind of political decency,” he said.
The AIADMK’s outburst comes at a time when there are reports in the vernacular media about the possibility of the DMK coming closer to the BJP. Though Stalin in his address to the General Council on August 28 had declared that his top priority was in teaching the BJP a lesson by sending it packing from New Delhi, veteran political commentators pointed out that these are muscle flexing seen before alliance formation.
“Even Karunanidhi had described the BJP as a communal party of the highest order and declared that he would not have anything to do with such a political party. Within two months he made a volte face and aligned with the same BJP,” said Raveenthrhan Thuraisamy, political commentator.
He also pointed out that the group fighting in Congress in the State has reached alarming proportions with factions owing allegiance to TNCC president Thirunavakarassar and former chief EVKS Elangovan fighting it out in the street.
