Protests rocked the streets in different parts of the State on Wednesday in protest against the police failure to trace the culprits behind the killing of students’ leader lafikul Islam in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday even as police have detained three people for their alleged role in the killing.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had rushed State’s Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay to take stock of the situation on Tuesday and sent senior Cabinet Ministers Pramila Rani Brahma and Parimal Suklabaidya on Wednesday to Kokrajhar. Thousands of people blocked the highways for two hours in different parts of the State as mark of protests and shouted slogans demanding a CBI probe into the killing.
Islam, a prominent leader of All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU), was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen at Tataguri market in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday evening.
“There can be involvementof militants or cattle smugglers active in lower Assam. However, it is too early to comment. We are working on all the angles to trace the culprits,” Sahay said on Wednesday.
He said the deceased was provided PSOs by the police. “However, he decided not to roam around with the PSOs and the attackers must have taken advantage of the situation,” Sahay said.
Sahay said that the police have instituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident and assured that the culprits will be brought to the book soon.
He said that additional forces have been sent to the district so that situation does not go out of control.
The DGP further admitted about presence of illegal arms in BTAD districts and said that police and other security agencies have been carrying out operations against the illegal arms.
