Property disputes were the reason for 3,169 murders across the country during the period.
“In Bihar, Police cannot directly intervene in the cases of property dispute. However, when murders take place in such disputes, we prefer to seize the property of the accused if he is absconding”, said a Police official of the State.
The report also said that love affairs and sexual violence too have remained to be one of the raison d'etre for killings in the State. The compiled data revealed that 100 murders took place in Bihar last year because of love affairs and sexual offences. Altogether 2,549 killings were reported across the country as fallout of love affairs and sexual offence.
Significantly, Bihar had recorded the highest number of killings over property disputes in the country even in the year 2012 when the State had lodged 1,159 cases of murders related to property disputes which, said the NCRB report, was 32.5 per cent of the total murders taken place in the State.
Similarly, 101 women were killed in dowry related cases last year but interestingly, the State Police did not file even a single chargesheet in dowry deaths in 2013, said the NCRB report.
The NCRB report further said that 371 persons were killed allegedly for personal gain while 591 murders took place in Bihar for personal enmity or personal vendetta
