Finally after more than a week-long tug-of-war, the Trinamool Government under immense pressure from the Opposition parties, on Monday lifted the prohibitive orders at Makra-Chowmandalpur villages letting in the local BJP leadership, with relief materials, to reach and interact with the villagers.
The two villages under Parui Police Station in Birbhum district had in the past fortnight witnessed massive bombing and gun-fights between the Trinamool and the BJP leading to three deaths. SP Yadav, SDPO Bolpur on Monday said, “As the law and order situation has improved, Section 144 is being lifted.”
The prohibitive orders were clamped on October 25 apparently in order to prevent the high-powered delegations of other parties, including the BJP and the left from entering the villages.
Subsequently, a BJP delegation led by party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, left delegation led by Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee and the Congress team led by PCC president Adhir Chwodhury were stopped by the police from entering the villages often leading to high-voltage drama ending in scuffles and arrest of many of these leaders.
Fresh trouble broke out on Monday even after the lifting of the orders when the Congress protested against the “partisan treatment” of the Government in “letting in the BJP team and stopping us from doing so.” However, the situation was quickly brought under control, police said.
