Prof beaten up for criticising TMC union on facebook

In an apparent indication that the Trinamool Congress had forgotten nothing and learnt nothing from the cartoon gate controversy in which a Jadavpur University professor was jailed by the police for posting an innocuous cartoon featuring Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Railway Ministers Dinesh Trivedi and Mukul Roy, a college teacher was brutally assaulted by the members of Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad, a student’s arm of the ruling outfit, inside the college where he teaches.

His fault: He had written in the facebook against the TMCP’s winning the Students’ Union elections by force. Amit Roy a professor of economics at Ghatal College was on Tuesday attacked by the students belonging to the TMCP led by the Union general secretary Hemant Das, college sources said adding he was first attacked inside the staffroom and then dragged out, pushed to the ground and kicked and abused by the students.

Though a formal complaint was lodged with the police, “though they have not given me any receipt copy of the complaint,” the professor said. The incident took place days after a school teacher was beaten up for a Republic Day speech inside his school that the Trinamool men thought went against the party. A similar incident had taken place when Ambikesh Mahapatra a JU professor had posted an innocuous cartoon featuring Banerjee, Roy and Trivedi in the FB. The police arrested the professor and kept him behind the bar though the charges were bailable in nature. The news had hit the national headlines then.
