The Government on Tuesday ordered a probe into the alleged beating of three police officers by former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Moradabad, Rajesh Modak D Rao, at his residence for keeping a Samajwadi Party leader waiting.
IG, Crime, Asheesh Gupta on Tuesday said that a departmental probe had been ordered against Modak and a letter in this regard had been sent to the Government for appointment of an officer to conduct the probe.
However, the move seems to be mere eyewash as official sources confirmed that the Government had secretly revoked Modak’s suspension on Sunday. Sources added that the Government was forced to suspend Modak last month as the media took up the issue of the assault of three of his followers.
The Government initially tried to continue with Modak and did not issue a suspension order. No officer was appointed to conduct a probe into the matter. Senior officers at the Home department kept on delaying the issue claiming that the probe would be handed over either to the IG, Zone, or to the DIG, Range, of Moradabad.
When news reports claimed that the Government was trying to shield Modak, Under Secretary of UP Governor Bl Joshi reportedly dispatched a letter to the Government seeking a detailed report on the matter. Sources claimed that the Government was waiting for things to cool down and was in no mood to take action against Modak as he was the blue-eyed boy of top leaders of the Samajwadi Party. Moreover, he had assaulted the followers for keeping a leader of the ruling party waiting.
Any stern action against Modak would have sent across the message to senior officers that they would have to face action if they tried to show their loyalty towards the ruling party. Sources said that Modak might be given a plum post for his loyalty to the Samajwadi Party.
The state Government had suspended Moradabad SSP Rajesh Modak D Rao for allegedly beating up three policemen, identified as Guman Singh, Sunder Singh and Daya Kishan, at his residence for making senior SP leader HT Hasan wait. The harassed policemen had lodged a complaint with the DIG who later initiated action.
