Probe criminality of Radia tapes by Oct 1: SC to CBI
Published on:

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed CBI to probe criminality of certain portions of the Nira Radia tapes by October 1.

Concluding a two-hour in-camera proceedings related to the leak of the Radia tapes, after a petition in this regard was raised by former industrialist Ratan Tata, a bench of Justices GS Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda felt that the investigation into the tapes had missed certain portions, which had significant bearing on national security and cross-border transactions.

With two Additional Solicitor Generals (ASG) lN Rao and Paras Kuhad appearing for Centre and CBI respectively, the bench shared its concerns over the criminality in the tapes that had trans-border implications and hence the need to hold a closed-door proceeding.

Also present in the hearing were two junior lawyers assisting the ASGs accompanied by officials of IT department and CBI sleuths who handled the tapes.

Posting the matter for October 1, the bench asked the lawyers present in the Court to convey the information to the other lawyers appearing in the case. The in-camera proceeding, which drew curiosity of large number of lawyers, media persons and government officials, assembled outside Court No 2 of Supreme Court, began at 10.30 am and finished a little before 12.30 pm.
