Probe against UP cop closed on basis of 'dead' witness' statement

An investigation registered under violence, dacoity and other sections of IPC against a sleuth of the Uttar Pradesh Police has been closed on the basis of a 'witness' who had already passed away more than a decade back. However, all the proceedings against the cop had been delayed. Even the order of the High Court passed a year back directing stern action had been ignored.

Now, finally the matter came before Information Commissioner, Hafiz Usman, who now ordered the present DGP, AK Jain, to file an action-taken report within a month. When contacted, Usman said that action should be taken not only against the officer who had investigated the matter, but against all senior officers for supporting the guilty cop.

Usman claimed that one Saleem, a resident of Bhawa Sarai locality of Kotwali Saher police station in Saharanpur, had lodged a report in 2013, claiming that some criminals, who were harassing his daughter, had barged into his house and brutally assaulted him and his family members.

Saleem took several rounds from the local police station to the offices of senior officers but he reportedly failed to get his report registered. Finally after the court intervened, the local police registered a case. However, the investigating officer, sub-inspector, Waseef  Siddiqui, gave relief to the accused by filing a report on basis of statements of a witness who was already dead.
