Kerala’s Congress-led UDF Government on Monday admitted that prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed during the four years of its rule even as there are indications of rice - Keralites’ staple food - could become dearer during the season of Onam festival falling next month.
Food and Civil supplies Minister Anoop Jacob told the State Assembly that the price of milk had gone up by 59 per cent since 2011 whereas vegetables had become dearer by 50 per cent but the price of onion had gone up by 89 per cent. The price rise had become obvious in all fields, the Minister admitted.
Anoop Jacob said coconut oil, Malayalees’ favourite cooking medium, had become costlier by 51 per cent while price of coconuts had gone up by 75 per cent. The rise in prices of essential commodities had led to a corresponding increase in food price at restaurants.
