Pregnant mothers’ environmental exposure to toxic metals may adversely impact kidney development in their babies which exhibits when they attain adulthood, a team of researchers have suspected as they sought to give a clue into the kidney ailments of unknown origins.

And it is more threatening, warned the researchers as they noted, “It’s a kind of kidney disease occurring in younger people, and it is characterized by more rapid decline in kidney function.

People go from diagnosis to death in 10 years.”

The study holds importance for India too where kidney ailments are on increase but this link with toxic metals has not been ever considered. Usually, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and family history are attributed to the main risk factors for developing chronic kidney disease.

The researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health said that would-be mom’s exposure to toxic metals sets the stage for a problem that doesn’t become apparent until the baby is an adult.
