Itanagar, Jul 28 (PTI) The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) on Sunday appointed Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng as the Legislature Party leader in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly.

The decision was made at a meeting of the PPA Legislature Party chaired by party president Nabam Vivek.

In addition to Tayeng’s appointment, the party named Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering as Deputy Legislature Party Leader and Liromoba MLA Pesi Jilen as Chief Whip. Vivek, who is also the Doimukh MLA, said the party would soon appoint functionaries to vacant posts across different organisational levels.

"This is a necessary step to strengthen the party’s structure in the Assembly," he said in a statement on Monday.

The PPA had won two seats in the April 19, 2024 Assembly elections, but its legislative strength increased to six after four MLAs from the National People's Party (NPP) recently joined its ranks.

The former NPP legislators who shifted to PPA include Namgey Tsering (Tawang), Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East), and Oni Panyang (Mariyang-Geku) — all first-time MLAs.

In the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, the ruling BJP holds 46 seats, followed by the PPA with six. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has three, the Congress and NPP have one each, and three members are Independents.
