Eight months his actress-turned-author wife Twinkle Khanna was trolled for her sarcastic tweet that her morning walks were being ruined by people defecating in the open, a bio-toilet-funded by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar was thrown open to the public at Jahu beach in north-west Mumbai on Tuesday.
Having taken seriously Twinkle’s “insensitive” tweet that had earned her considerable criticism, Akshay Kumar–working in tandem with Shiv Sena’s youth wing president Aditya Thackeray–spent Rs 10 lakh on the construction of a bio-toilet at the Juhu beach.
After the bio-toilet with running water facility and separate enclosures for men and women, was completed, Akshay joined the Yuv Sena chief and handed it formally over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for public use and maintenance.
Twinkle’s August 19, 2017 tweet: “Good morning and I guess here is the first scene of Toilet Ek Prem Katha part 2 #WhenYourWalkGoesDownTheToilet” showing a photograph of a man defecating in public had created quite a buzz in the social media.
Hundreds of her followers had slammed her for her “insensitivity” towards slum dwellers who had no choice but to defecate in the open.
Posting two photographs of a bio-toilet funded by his friend Akshay Kumar, a satisfied Aditya tweeted: “ Tweeps, @akshaykumar ji & I have made a small contribution to our dear city. We chose to add privately to the efforts of the BMC by making a public toilet in Juhu, handed it over to the BMC now. Small contribution but just the beginning!”
“I’m very very thankful to @akshaykumar ji for being such an ever inspiring friend & a real life hero in contributing to the society. Free self defence classes for women (more than 15k girls trained till date), our mission of fitting 100 sanitary pad machines & now this!,” the Yuv Sena chief stated.
“There’s so much he does for all anyway, I’m glad to always have an opportunity to team up with him for good. @akshaykumar,” Jr Thackeray added.
A grateful Twinkle wrote from twitter handle @mrsfunnybones: “I don’t know if we are a perfect match but his big heart does match my big mouth :) Thank you @AUThackeray for making this possible! #WalkTheWalk".
