Post-poll violence: Blast in Birbhum club house

Published on:

A massive blast occurred inside a club house at Mallarpur in Birbhum district bringing down almost the entire concrete structure prompting the ruling Trinamool Congresspoint fingers of accusation at the BJP.

The midnight blast occurred amid reports of ongoing post-election violence coming from various districts.

The blast comes a day after a TMC leader was shot dead by alleged BJP men at Bandel in Howrah district some 35 km off Kolkata.

Though no casualty was reported from the blast spot the intensity of the blast was such that its sound could be heard from 2-3 km away, locals said adding the major portion of the concrete building completely caved in due to the impact of the blast.

The Trinamnool Congress accused the BJP of importing bombs from Jharkhand. “The BJP talks of political violence but the blast is an example of how they are accumulating bombs imported from Jharkhand to dominate the Birbhum district,” TMC strongman and district president Anubrata Mondal said demanding a thorough probe into the incident.

“Meghdoot Club where the blast took place is controlled by the BJP and it is the proof of how they have been bringing explosives from Jharkhand to create trouble in Bengal,” Mondal said.

Sources said the intensity of the blast matched that of the Khagragarh explosion that took place on October 2, 2014. Subsequent investigations by the National Investigation Agency blew the lid off a conspiracy hatched by Bangladesh terror group Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The Crime Investigation Department which was investigating the case however would not come to any immediate conclusion. “We are probing the case and the materials have been sent for forensic test,” a senior official said adding all angles would be probed.

BJP refuted TMC’s claim saying the blast was the upshot of the infighting within the Trinamool Congress. “The club does not belong to the BJP. It is a general club where the people from all walks of life come and mingle,” a local BJP leader said adding they were ready to be probed.

Elsewhere in continuing political violence alleged BJP workers attacked the

vehicle of TMC MLA Udayan Guha at Dinhata in North Bengal. Guha narrowly escaped the attacked while his vehicle was smashed. BJP district president Malati Rava however refuted the charges saying the attack was the result of infighting in the TMC.

Post-poll political violence continued at Ghatal and Khargapur too where TMC party offices were reportedly attacked by the BJP workers. In the skirmish that ensued at least 14 persons from two sides were injured, sources said.
