Post-Nagrota attack: NIA, State police still struggling to track down sleeper cell

Published on:

One month after the Nagrota terror attack National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with the State Police force and other State and Central Intelligence agencies are struggling to track down the sleeper cell of Over Ground Workers (OGW), which might have helped the  heavily armed fidayeen to easily approach Army’s artillery unit on the periphery of fortified 16 Corps headquarters.

Seven Army personnel including two Major rank officers had sacrificed their lives before neutralising three fidayeen in a day long operation on November 29.

NIA had taken up the investigation in the case on December 7. Since then the premiere investigating agency is groping in the dark as it is yet to recover the  transport vehicle possibly used for transporting the fidayeen from their safe hideout to the Nagrota based Army unit.

Secondly, NIA is still clueless over the exact route taken by the fidayeen, dressed in police uniform, before targeting the Army unit in the wee hours of November 29.

On the other hand fresh intelligence report warning about the possibility of OGW's sheltering another group of fidayeen is keeping the security forces  in the region on their tenterhooks.

Following the Nagrota terror attack Indian army had also conducted a separate inquiry and in its assessment report the army authorities too had zeroed in on the role of the OGW's behind the attack.

The army authorities had also pointed out loopholes in the perimeter security of vital installations in the region and the same was exploited by the fidayeen before targeted the army camps.

Army officers  had also claimed that unless local police and other agencies expose the OGW network it would be difficult to unmask the mastermind behind the attack.

Meanwhile, high alert was sounded in Jammu  last week  and thorough checking of vehicles was ordered at the entry and exit points of Jammu city and along the national highway dotted with vital security installations to prevent any fresh strike.

Soon after taking over the investigation in the case NIA team had rounded up few suspects in the case but so far they have failed to extract vital clueless to unravel the conspiracy behind the terror plot.

According to highly placed official sources, "the senior officers of the multi tier security grid are a worried lot as they suspect fidayeen may have been doing recee of targets with help from their over ground workers".

According to these intel reports army installations  in Jammu could be targeted again along with some civilian target. Following these alerts strict vigil is maintained in and around the army camps located in and around Jammu.

Area domination patrols are sent out at different intervals and perimeter vigil has been enhanced to keep a track on the movement of suspected people. A proposal to install CCTV  cameras has also been mooted for army camps to strengthen the perimeter security.
