In a post-Godhara riots case, the Gujarat High Court has convicted seven people for murder in Viramgam town of Ahmedabad District.

The High Court will pronounce sentence to all the convicts on July 25. The High Court overturned judgment of trail court, which had convicted two persons for murder, four for lesser offences and acquitted four of all the charges, among the 10 accused in the Viramgam town riot case.

A mob of approximately 40 people attacked a minority-dominated locality in Viramgam on February 28, a day after Sabarmati Express train burning in Godhra that saw deaths of 59 people, leading to State-wide riots. The mob in Viramgam tried to demolish a place of worship. When the locals tried to prevent them, violence erupted, leading to death of three persons.

The High Court before conviction, in 2010 had directed re-investigation of the case on plea of one of the eyewitnesses. The seven found guilty of murder have been convicted for offences under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 325 and 326 (causing grevious hurt) of the IPC.
