At least two people were killed and over a dozen others were injured after police resorted to firing to disperse some irate mob in different parts of Nagaland on late Tuesday night over the scheduled poll of the Urban local Body (UlB) Polls.
Police said irate mob came out to the streets with lathis and other weapons in protest against the Government’s decision to hold the urban local body polls on Wednesday (today).
The Government’s decision to hold the polls came in the wake of an order by the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday that justified 33 per cent reservation for women in urban local body polls and instructed the Government to hold the polls and provide security to the candidates and voters if needed.
The clash broke out in Nagaland’s commercial hub Dimapur and longleng towns where hundreds of people armed with lathis and other weapons came out to the streets to oppose the Government’s move to hold the UlB polls.
“Police had to resort to firing at an irate mob who tried to attack the private residence of Nagaland CM TR Zeliang near Dimapur. At least five were injured and two of them succumbed to their injuries later,” said a senior police official while talking to The Pioneer.
