Police tighten vigil on firecracker sales, storage during Diwali

The Jharkhand Police and district administration will maintain strict vigil on the sale, storage and use of firecrackers during Diwali and Chhath. In view of the risk of fire incidents and accidents during the festive season, the Special Branch of the Jharkhand Police Headquarters has directed all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to ensure adequate security arrangements.

The directives include inspections of firecracker shops, action against illegal storage and sale, and strict enforcement of restrictions on fireworks beyond the permitted hours.

The district administration has been asked to ensure that firecracker dealers comply with the conditions specified in their licences. District police will conduct periodic raids on firecracker shops to verify stock and inspect documents related to storage. Action will be taken against those found storing or selling firecrackers without proper authorisation.

The police will also check whether vendors are complying with prescribed safety standards. Special monitoring will be undertaken to prevent the sale of high-decibel firecrackers.

According to the police headquarters' instructions, fireworks on Diwali will be permitted only between 8 pm and 10 pm. The restriction is in accordance with the Supreme Court's directions and guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). All districts have been directed to strictly enforce the prescribed time limit.

During Chhath, awareness campaigns will also be conducted to discourage the use of firecrackers and fireworks at riverbanks and other worship venues. Local police stations, in coordination with Chhath Puja committees, will sensitise devotees about the restrictions during prayers and the offering of arghya. Public announcements will also be made to spread awareness.

To tackle fire emergencies, fire brigades will be stationed at vulnerable locations. District authorities have been instructed to review preparedness through meetings with fire service officials and ensure prompt action in case of any emergency.

The police headquarters has emphasised that firefighting arrangements must remain fully operational throughout the festive period. All districts have been directed to exercise special caution and maintain continuous surveillance, from the sale and storage of firecrackers to their use during celebrations.
