Police arrest one, recover 8 AK series, two INSAS rifles in Assam

The Assam police have arrested one person for his suspected involvement with Islamic fundamentalist organisation and recovered some arms and ammunition from his possession including eight hand-made AK series rifles and two INSAS rifles in Chirang district on Friday.

A senior officer of the Chirang police confirmed this on Friday while adding that police are interrogating the arrested person to get more details about the Islamic organisation operating in Assam.

Police said they were yet to ascertain the particular terror module the arrested person had been working for.

The arrest and recovery came in the wake of security forces’ busting of a training camp of the Islamic fundamentalist organisation and subsequent arrest of three of its cadres from a remote location in Chirang district on Wednesday. Police said some youths hailing from Barpeta, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Nalbari and Kokrajhar districts have been undergoing training in the camps. On Wednesday, the police had also recovered army camouflage from the busted camp.

The busting of the training camp of the Islamic fundamentalist organisation and arrest have sent the police and security forces into a tizzy as the Chirang district-which a part of the Bodo dominated Bodominated Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) in Assam —had witnessed severe clashes between the dominant Bodos and Bengali speaking Muslim migrants in the past.
