Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to those who resisted the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, as the country marked the 48th anniversary of this significant event. In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the 21-month period as an "unforgettable chapter in our history" and emphasised that it stood in stark contrast to the democratic values cherished by the Indian Constitution.

He expressed his respect for the courageous individuals who resisted the emergency and worked towards upholding the spirit of democracy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed these sentiments, describing the emergency as an indelible "black spot" in Indian democracy.
